CHAPTER TEN

“OPEN THE DOOR,” CALLED A voice. The clink of a turning lock and the clattering of metal on metal punctuated his sentence. Estan tried to open her eyes. She had been here before. Returning from unconsciousness was something with which she never wished to become familiar.

‘No wait, I’m awake,’ she thought as she opened her eyes, still seeing nothing but black. ‘Blindfold.’ She put all her focus into hearing, trying to read the room. Footsteps echoed towards her at a slow pace, a leisurely walk. The steps stopped, and with them any other noise, apart from the beating of her own heart.

She tried to take off the blindfold. Her hands were bound tightly behind her back as she shuffled awkwardly up to sit on her knees. Estan tried to remember the last events before everything went dark.

The blindfold came off with one yank. She squinted as the artificial light flooded her eyes. She blinked away the glare to see a person standing over her, stooping down, examining his catch. He stepped back with a disappointed grunt. Adorned in a black suit, black tie, black shoes. His attire was impeccably pressed, shoes reflecting her distorted image across their bow. She blinked again. His face was old — older than any Unity man she had seen in a long time, Older than Marv and Koa even. But unlike Marv, this man was well-groomed, his silver hair brushed to one side, chin cleanly shaved, showing the strain lines of his jaw where he clenched his teeth tight shut.

“Where am I?” she asked with a groan.

“A Unity holding cell,” he answered coldly. She looked around the space, seeing her friends in similar situations to her own. A guard stepped forward from behind the man and one by one pulled off their blindfolds.

“Jeez!” Hugo said, shaking his head as he blinked away the blinding light. Orson and Elanor were doing the same. Marv’s face was stern, watching the man standing over them with cold eyes.

“Long time no see,” Marv croaked.

The man turned his attention to the oldest of the group. “Do I know you?” he asked.

Marv laughed and glanced down at the floor in amazement. “You Unity suits are all the same. The Rejuvenation Project? The men you left out there to die when you abandoned it? Ring any bells?” he snapped.

The man raised an eyebrow. “I can’t be expected to remember every item of lost property, especially from that many years ago.” He looked down his nose at the man on his knees.

“Lost Property.” Marv laughed, shaking his head.

Orson piped up, “Ignore him, Marv. He’s just another suit.”

Marv shook his head. “No, not this one, kid – he’s the suit, at least in this Mega Corps.” He looked back up at the black-dressed man. “Ain’t that right?”

The man ran his eyes across the kneeling group, a sour look across his face. “My name is Sabastian Drazar — and yes, you are correct. I have been tasked with overseeing the Mega Corps and its dealings in this region.
